Shelby McDowell Deaderick was a second lieutenant in Company I of the Sixty-third Tennessee Infantry. In the Battle of Chickamauga, Lieutenant Shelby Deaderick and Captain James Gillespie were charging up Snodgrass Hill when the same piece of shot killed both instantly. The shot passed through Lieutenant Deaderick's neck and entered the temple of Captain Gillespie. Dr. Eugene Deaderick, son of John Franklin Deaderick, was in the battle and saw the two fall. They were wrapped in the same blanket and buried in the same grave.
